Research Fellow in the English Research Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University having recently held the Leverhulme Trust Fellowship for the study of psychoanalytic ideas in Scotland. The personal relations tradition that runs from Suttie, through Fairbairn and Macmurray to Sutherland is an important part of his research. He has authored an introduction to R.D. Laing (EUP 2004) and has various pieces of research forthcoming, some in the crossover between literature and psychoanalysis, others directly addressing psychoanalytic history and ideas.
