A historically-minded research sociologist with a 38-year interest in the caring professions, especially their training. Research has included work with Italian social workers, Italian teachers, Scottish academics, Scottish student nurses, English priests, Cuban doctors, Argentine and Chilean students. In addition to those fields has written on new universities in South Italy (for European Cultural Foundation), family-school relations in Italy (for European Commission), values in professional education (for Higher Education Foundation) and on teenage pregnancy in Dundee (for Tayside Health Board) and a Scottish Executive-funded action research project on spirituality in health and social care. He is currently working on self-confidence in children in Scotland, Spain and Australia.
