Now a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, most of my work is through the Scottish Institute of Human Relations, as a training analyst, and supervisor and teacher. I also find satisfactions in other psychotherapeutic work and supervisions. After medical and general psychiatry training in Edinburgh, I specialised in child and family psychiatry from 1973 to 1989, in London, including the Tavistock Clinic.
I also completed my psychoanalytical training before returning north to join SIHR, as I admired their philosophy that the analytical ideas should be available to the whole community through many channels. My own first analysis was with Jock Sutherland, and Fairbairn was the writer that made most twentieth century sense of the psychoanalytical tradition.
Chairing the Board of Wellspring is an opportunity to enable a small counselling and therapy charity to continue its 30 years contribution to the Edinburgh area, while within SIHR I focus mostly on its teaching/training role, yet I see myself more a clinician than a teacher: I hope that SIHR will link up more with Edinburgh University in due time.
