My first degree, from the French University of Clermont-Ferrand, was in French Literature with English and Italian as subsidiary languages. This led me to come to Scotland, which I loved straight away, and to change my career plans from teaching to nursing.

I am a qualified mental health nurse and spent ten stimulating practice years at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, in the only two psychodynamically oriented inpatient units there at the time; Ward 1 and the Young People's Unit. Psychodynamic thinking has remained of great importance to me. I now work in higher education where I develop and run multi-disciplinary programmes for practitioners interested in children and young people's mental health.

I have recently completed a Ph D on young people’s experience of participation in day and inpatient mental health services and I intend to continue investigating the links between therapeutic relationships, ethics and user participation.
